About the project
De Stap naar Gezonder (The Step towards Healthier Living) is a regional health platform developed in collaboration with GGZ Eindhoven and regional partners. The platform empowers residents of the region to take control of their health independently and within their communities. Its mission? Promoting self-help and prevention to reduce the need for formal healthcare services like GPs or mental health institutions.
Visual design
De Stap naar Gezonder is a merging of several regional platforms, some of which already had an recognizable visual identity. We began by analyzing these existing platforms, identifying which elements to preserve and where updates were needed. The final design features a recognizable color palette that ties the themes together, with a boldly colored bar — the platform's DNA — that runs consistently across every page.
Due to limited resources and a broad target audience, we opted for an open-source illustration library. For the specific themes, I designed custom variants of these illustrations: maintaining the visual style while adding a personalized touch.
Digital accessibility
Given the platform’s wide-reaching audience, digital accessibility was a top priority. The website is designed to be easy to navigate, even for those less familiar with digital interfaces. All color combinations meet digital accessibility (WCAG) contrast standards, ensuring readability for everyone. Additionally, text-to-speech functionality via ReadSpeaker was integrated, making the platform more accessible for people with visual impairments. Designed and built fully responsive, the website provides a seamless experience across all devices.
Collaboration
De Stap naar Gezonder is powered by a small, dedicated team of professionals. We designed and developed the first version of the website in 2022, starting with the definition of the visual style and expanding it step by step. After the initial launch, the content team continued to build the platform, transforming it into a valuable resource for the region. In 2024, following significant growth, we revisited and refreshed the platform to better align with user needs and the updated regional health strategy.
