Design poem and poem painted on wall

THE CHALLENGE

The De Zoek naar Schittering foundation helps initiatives promoting poetry in public spaces. For the project Geluk op Zuid the foundation hosted a poetry competition for primary school children based on the theme  ‘geluk’ (joy, happiness). One of the winners, 9-year-old Dieudonné Kiesel, won to have a part of her poem painted on a wall in the Feijenoord area of Rotterdam. I was asked to make a typographic design to be hand-painted on a building.

THE OUTCOME

With a beautiful poem as my briefing, I decided to enhance Dieudonné’s words with small illustrations of the natural elements she describes. The blue and dark-red color scheme complement the colors of the building, or as one person described it ‘make it feel like it belongs there’. Artist Ricardo van Zwol hand-painted my design on the wall. More on this project in my blog post.
